The Frivolous Opposition

By Jason Kettinger | Posted at 6:37 PM

Vice President Harris’ seeming enthusiasm for “reproductive rights” kept me from fully supporting her. But, anyone saying “Trump is the obvious choice” has not taken stock of how bad he really is.

My Christian brothers and sisters need to know that I like Harris. My decision wasn’t an agonizing one, or in any way painful.

Trump was not the obvious choice. Everything happening in the Trump Administration now is as disqualifying as anything in the first term. I honestly fail to understand how he has any supporters left.

I leave out anyone who reluctantly and painfully voted Trump because they decided that the Dobbs decision needed to be safe. The Supreme Court’s 2022 reversal of Roe v. Wade’s broad legalization of abortion was an important step towards protecting the most vulnerable lives. Indeed, the Democrats even rhetorically moving to codify Roe permanently by legislation is reason enough to disqualify any officeholder who agrees. It is the worst violation of human rights today.

I don’t think their leaders realize how unpalatable just this makes them to many Christians. And while there are many Christians who weigh things differently, or who have little to no objection to abortion or even gender ideology, I do think sexual politics led by abortion is warping our politics, more than anything else.

Left-center Christians, and those whom we might call “moralists” on the Left, who think they have the high ground even electorally because of immigration cruelty, social cuts, or government dysfunction are kidding themselves. The Democratic candidate is behind going into 2028.

The only factor that could change this significantly is a war on Canada, a war against Ukraine, or some explicit move by Trump toward actual dictatorship. Some people may think we’re there, but the Democrats clearly do not believe that. If they really believed Trump was a danger they wouldn’t be so damned frivolous. Trump, and his Trumpite protégés, aren’t the obvious choices, but the Democrats’ antics ensure they aren’t either.

The opposition wasn’t wearing silly hats at the dawn of the Third Reich; people gave their lives trying to stop its leader. Emoting about the GOP, or the voters, without concrete action is the action of the unprincipled.

They were unprincipled when they supported MAGA candidates against normals in GOP primaries; they were unprincipled when they allowed the slander against Kavanaugh, when they could simply have voted against him for other reasons. In short, we have the unserious against the dangerous. It’s actually unclear to me who is worse.

Now, the Democrats are losing their usual share of nonwhite voters, against the closest thing to an actual racist and bigot we’ve had in lifetimes. Parties exist to win elections; no more, no less.

If the Democrats can’t do that, why do they exist?
