About Open for Business

The Journal of Ideas, Culture and Technology for the Business of Life

“Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light.”

—Joseph Pulitzer

Open for Business (ISSN 2153-5469) is a general interest magazine covering ideas, culture, technology and politics. We premiered on October 5, 2001 and have reached millions of readers around the world in the nearly two decades since. OFB is published by Universal Networks, LLC, an Internet communications and consulting company founded in 1996.

When we began, OFB launched as a publication focused on reporting news surrounding the then new frontier of Linux and Free/Open Source Software. Over the years, we have continued to keep an eye to emerging and interesting technology (and the philosophy around it) while expanding into the other topics that serve as our tent poles today.

The Internet changed quite a bit from the early days of OFB and at the end of 2012, our team went on what would become an eight year hiatus. However, with our continued passion for the subjects covered on these pages, the editors began conversations in late 2019 that led to a relaunch on July 28, 2020. With a rapidly changing world, we believe the voice of Open for Business once again is much needed and we are eager to welcome you back to this intersection of ideas, culture and technology for the business of life.

You can learn more of our story in Timothy Butler’s 20th Anniversary piece about OFB.
