MySQL AB, developers of the world's most popular open source database, announced a major new release of their namesake database yesterday. MySQL version 4.0, which is considered “alpha” quality, sports numerous improvements that may influence additional adoption of the database.

According to the announcement from MySQL AB, the next generation of the popular database will add better ANSI standards compliance, increased performace, and secure socket layer (SSL) based connections. Other notable additions to the system are better support for embedding MySQL into other software and an enhanced Latin character set for improved sorting of German texts, along with a long list of small modifications that you can see here.
