You might want to make sure that there is no dust in the print head
alignment area, or the paper picker. I have not seen the inside of this
printer but some use a slotted wheel and electronic sensor to determine
home position and keep track of where the print head is. Mind you if
this was the case then you should get an error message saying the print
head is not moving or has lost position. I would agree with Tim and you
that the nozzles are probably plugged with dry ink. One way to clear
them is to hold a cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol under the nozzles to
assist in the cleaning.
And then do the 3 step clearing of the nozzles as outlined in the user
guide
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/bpd07985/bpd07985.pdf
.
If you can remove the print head then you should be able to soak the
end in a shallow tray of isopropyl alcohol. Ink jet printer have to be
used fairly regularly or the nozzles will dry up. Not having heard this
unit in it's working mode I am not sure how much noise it would make
while actually printing, I know tha some of the older professional
series printers you would hear the print head come out of it's storage
position , and then hear the paper moving but not the print head moving.
Some allow you to open a cover and see the movement inside.

On my old Canon Printer the cleaning tool for the rollers was a
sheet of paper impregnated with rubber rejuvenating fluid which you feed
through the printer, thus cleaning those hard to get at (without doing a
tear down and rebuild) rollers. I have improvised by using heavier stock
paper and soaking it in said fluid, letting it dry for awhile then
feeding it through. You do not want the paper dripping wet.

I would try everything you can to get this printer going, as it has
a lot going for it. Not many printers have the paper handling that this
one has. Up to 13"x19" paper.

Use the tools that fit the job. MAC OS/X, Linux, BSD, Win/XP, but
always look for that better tool.
