Looks like the GNOME program NetworkManager might be interfering -
http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/ . NetworkManager seems to be
for wireless networks; if you're using it because you have a wireless
network, there may be an option in it to specify your nameservers. If you
don't have a wireless network, I'd say you can probably remove
NetworkManager with no ill-effects.
