From what I've heard, for the most part, the ability to pass along
64-bit blocks of data (i.e. to the RAM) is the primary difference
that has been exploited to this point. I've been running 64-bit Macs
for three years now and there is no user detectable difference in
things. Certainly, it isn't a performance booster in and of itself.
I think the lack of clear benefits has been a major factor in the
slow adoption of 64-bit. Apparently, I'm told, there are other
benefits I've not yet grasped, but they aren't exploited at present
in the desktop sector.
