It appears as if we have 3 points of view represented. If I understand
these correctly, the real issues are:
1) Some want to limit the list to only Linux/FOSS issues and especially
those pertaining to the Christian community. This is a "just the
facts"/"all business" style of list.
2) Others like the lively debates and spirited arguments. They feel that
it brings the list members closer and aids us in understanding
eachother. I mean, real friends stab you in the face and aren't afraid
of your opinion. This is a "friends and associates" style of list.
3) Another group would like a list with debate, but limited to certain
anasthetic topics. They like livelyness but don't like confrontation or
clashes that may offend or harm other list members. This is a "don't
offend anyone" style of list.
My personal sentiments are torn. I like a very lively list and I don't
get easily offended ... or atleast not here; Those creation/evolution
lists are insult central, where evolutionists win by offending people.
<rant>If you respond kind to their berating then you're un-Christian and
not honest. Of course, if being mean meant being dishonest, then they'd
be wrong the whole time. But of course, that rule only applies to
Christians. People who are mean all the time are more honest when
they're mean; Can you say hypocrite? I can. On the other hand, if you
don't respond in kind, then you lose the discussion. You look weak and
stupid before their mighty wit. It's like being on the Daily show. The
only way to make it honest and fair is to frame the debate before you
get started. I'm convinced that without insults and diatribes, the
entire evolution/atheist movement would collapse into the gellatenous
mass of confusion that it really is. That's the real problem, I guess.
Don't throw pearls before swine or they will trample on them ... and
you.</rant>
Anyway, I don't get too easily insulted. Some people are ultra sensitive
while others have particular pet issues. It's my feeling that using
modifiers like [NI], [PD] and [OT] such would save us alot of needless
headache and each party would be satisfied, being to filter or not
filter at will. Of course, if filtering software was added to the list
server and a preference was added to allow certain topics for certain
people (as they prefer) then I can imagine alot of this trouble would be
dealt with quite quickly.
Well, that's my opinion. Any thoughts?
