Those problems sound weird if you used to have stable system at the beginning. 
Have you had any hardware-upgrades? If yes, problems relate most propably to 
their drivers. I have a DIY-computer and remember having problems Windows 
(win98) default installation and some third-party sofware until I upgraded my 
graphics-card drivers and/or DirectX to the latest available. Linux used have 
hardware problems during first and second year, but later distributions have 
been ok.
