Well, I did a little searching through Scripture (BTW, if you have a Mac -
download MacSword), to see what scripture references I could come up with
regarding this.  First of all, Jeremiah 23 references adultery and lies in
connection with Sodom and Gomorrah.  Then we have Jude 7: "Even as Sodom and
Gomorrah, and the cities around them, having, in the same way as these, given
themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set
forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire." (WEB)

However, what about Jesus' words in Mark 6:11 - "Whoever will not receive you
nor hear you, as you depart from there, shake off the dust that is under your
feet for a testimony against them. Assuredly, I tell you, it will be more
tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”"

Well, on that "positive" note, happy 4th of July ;-)

I can't quite say that I agree with your comments (in a different email) that
the state is responsible
to the church.  Responsible to God, sure, but not necessarily to the church in
my view.  Perhaps thats why I sometimes fit in what might be labelled as liberal
circles: I tend to view both the state and church somewhat cynically.  Within
the church, we're still sinners, only forgiven by God's grace.
