I don't oppose patents, generally.  However, software is truly much
more akin to writing than to manufacturing.  We can both write stories
that are quite similar - same plot, same themes, same challenges and
so on.  However, the way you tell your story - different characters,
scenes, and times, etc., can be vastly different from mine.  Thus,
software patents prevent us from being able to implement the same
concepts in different ways.
