I'm not sure why the startx script works as it does on FreeBSD, but I'm
sure it's something to do with security -- that's the usual reason. In
the meantime, I made the proper adjustments where they ought to be, in
the X config. My next trick is to make sure I get the same window
manager without having to use the full path everytime:
startx /usr/X11R6/bin/icewm
Without that, I get generic X with an xterm or two.
