David,
One other thing you might want to try:
on hdsentinel.com, there is a Linux version that is a free download.  
Hdsentinel basically reads the SMART info from a disk and reports on 
the disk health.  If the firmware is corrupt or the chip is messing 
up the data as it passes through it, hdsentinel will probably notice 
that and be able to report to you about it.
