[CS-FSLUG] Swearing in this forum - CD, Vol 82, Issue 13

I suppose every age and every culture has a list of words that it is not
polite to use, and I try to repect those customs.  But to interpret the
scripture mention particular religious culture has ed ("swear not at all,
but let your nay be nay and your yea yea") as a proscription against the
casual use of the particular words that our particular religious culture
has proscribed seems a bit of an overkill.

The meaning is clearly that we ought not to bind ourselves with promises
mad under oath, and that our simple declaration of yes or no ought to be
held by ourselves as being binding.

Do you also think that one who idly uses the name of God (or any one of
his various names) is actually outside forgiveness? "The Lord will not
hold him guiltless that taketh His Name in vain".

Or  might it rather mean that those who want to call themselves
"Christians" or "God's people" or the "church of Christ" or "Jehovahs
witnesses" But refuse to trust in Him, but will "eat their own victuals
and wear their own apparel" have by their religiousity and self will cut
themselves off from real salvation.
