Many of the IBM ThinkPads have been shown to be
very Linux-friendly.

I ran several different distros on the one I
used to own.

A quick search using http://clusty.com "linux laptop ibm"
will bring up some good information.

If you already own a laptop things can get a bit more
dicey as some of them have used some proprietary
hardware.

A good test is to use a CD-based Linux distro and
to boot from that CD and see if it recognizes your
hardware prior to actually installing it to your
HDD.

Puppy, Unbutu, and several others do this.
