I am running Puppy on my laptop.  They have used
ndiswrapper in the past, and still do in some cases,
but have been developing cleaner solutions and now
their wireless app works really well.

It may be worth a try.

I think that most of what runs under Ubuntu will
port over to Puppy easily.
