I was a little impatient with that reply and sent it off before going
to Google myself.

here's an interesting page for Linux on the AMD PIC:

I'm just wondering where someone is suppose to get one of these things
and whether it's worth the cost, if it's really 300$ as one page
suggested then a computer from sub500 would be a better deal imo,
although on a boat you'd probably want something waterproof, which
sub500 computers are not.
