[CS-FSLUG] Would someone take pity on me?

Hi folks,
Would someone take pity on me? I'm afraid I havent been reading posts quite a
while, but I've had some troubles to distract me. Right now I'm in tears
because I can't get my backup of my documents done - no how.

At Easter my Windows 98 OS crashed, so I was forced to move into and work in
Mandrake even though I didn't know how to do some things yet. Like make
backups, or doing much at the konsole, or get my sound and colour printer to
work. I just put my backups on a separate partition on this drive.

I did roar along though and soon was able to do all my usual work, so I just
set those issues on the back burner. Until June 7, when I shut down to get
out of a mess with KWord going blank when I'd inserted a floppy. I couldn't
get back in so I re-installed Mandrake 9.1 3x. The third time in partition
stage, I clicked "restore partition." Minutes later the whole drive went
white! Including my backup.

So this time I set aside some days to LEARN how to do backup and to mount and
unmount my /dev drives. Or I thought I had. I got X-CD Roast to work and make
some backups. Last weekend I tried again, and it refused. I finally got K3B
to do it. But when I tried to see what was on the CD it was blank. Each time!

Today I'm trying again. X-CDRoast won't do it.
K3b keeps saying my driver for cdrdao is missing, and to set it, - but I don't
know where.
ERoast just went through all the motions and yet, when I ask for -ls at the
konsole (in the cdrom) it is blank. So is SuperUser in Konquerer.

Obviously I'm lacking some information. Is there a backup for dummies manual
somewhere?

Yes, I've gone up and down in the man mount files but the more I read or try
things the more confused I get!

Because of my crashes I'm afraid of losing everything again. I really MUST
learn to back up my stuff on other media than the hard drive. How much easier
if I could just set all my drives to be permanently mounted, and be able to
copy and paste files to the CDs.

I have spent hours online searching via google, but some of the advice is
conflicting, or so it seems to me.
