I might as well confess as well, I used to use JEdit not only as a text
and HTML editor but also as an IDE for Java and C++. It is a very
powerful but easy to use text editor and there are several plugins
available for it, all you need is a JVM and a reasonable processor and
ram, I used to run it on a Celeron 466 with 128 Mb of ram and there it
ran just a little sluggish but it was worthwhile.

I'd recommend you get the latest Sun JVM to run JEdit since it will have
some speed improvements, http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
