Socialism -- why doesn't it work?

"For a long time, socialists have been predicting that their systems
would overpower competing free market systems. If you're old enough,
you may remember Soviet President Nikita Khrushchev pounding his shoe
on his UN desk and promising to the US representatives 'We will bury
you.' Instead, the Soviet Union fell apart, both politically and
economically. Sweden was equally sure their system would succeed, and
have had to back off drastically. Despite such lessons, American
'progressives' or 'liberals' still believe that redistribution of
wealth and welfare programs, combined to some mystical degree with a
somewhat free economy can produce a strong nation with few problems."
