To me this sounds like you have managed to change your screen resolution too 
low (your icons probably are still there, but they are not in the visible 
area you see in your monitor). Try to "cycle" all available resolutions by 
pressing ctrl+alt++ keys until the resolution is right. If you can find the 
better resolution (third "+"-key is the one at the right side of your 
keyboard - not the one below F9). If new resolution is not permanent (eg. 
problem occurs again after next reboot) you should put it as default into 
configuration files. You can do it by using tools Mandrake has in it's 
control-center.
