This is a known bug in the X.org 'intel' driver. When you have such
trouble, the advice has been switch to the older 'i810' driver in your X
config. I found it worked really well on several laptops.

Also, many distros do not include by default the 'intelfb' module, which
is needed to get a full-sized console display.
