I've tried OpenSUSE 10.0 on a desktop and a laptop and the install hung
on every option I tried too.

Not sure exactly where, but I'm sure there is.  I know in Grub (does
suse use grub?) there's a way to edit the boot parameters to pass to the
kernel, but don't have anything in front of me to check things out right
now.  On the Grub screen press "e" to edit the parameters, I think.
