I would try without the video options added just for kicks first.  So you 
have three hard drives in this?  Are you sure you are using the 
2.6.10-gentoo-r6 kernel?  During the install process you may have gotten a 
newer kernel... something like 2.6.10-gentoo-r12 maybe.  But anyway the 
instructions should not be trusted verbatim.  Check out the way they have 
you do grub.conf for stage one; it's much cleaner.
