I may be able to borrow a USB drive.

Folks, I need to note here this was more about idle curiosity, not a
desperate search for a solution. This second laptop is really a low
priority in my life, since my main machine -- the one I just bought a good
used mobo, CPU and RAM for -- has failed. That's a prayer request, BTW.
I'm saving to buy a new one. I'm currently working from an ancient
ProSignia 200 with a 233Mhz CPU. It's cramped but reliable, so far.

As for the laptop, I was just wondering what everyone else would do. It's
an academic question. Offers to help are wonderful, and I really
appreciate all of them, but that's not what I was seeking. If someone
already had a bunch of Linux or 32-bit DOS (or other OS) on floppy, that
would be a different matter. Frankly, I am inclined to do the 32-bit DOS
route.
