I believe the virus writers are now dominated by a commercial intent:
they harvest the maximum number of slaved boxes to then lease to
spammers. Thus, spammers can hide their real identity and not get
booted from their ISP.

Just yesterday I had to clean up a bunch of blog spam from one IP
address, but the ISP informed me the machine was zombied, and there was
no means to trace the real culprit. At least the they closed its
connection to prevent further mischief.
