Whew, the mail on this group is overwhelming! I can't keep up.
Maybe I have too many irons in the fire, but ... Anyway, guess I don't
have to explain my busy-ness.

Yes, I've re-checked them several times.

Okay, I read this day before yesterday , just before going back into
Mandrake, so I followed your instructions. The log file looks like this;
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: pppd 2.4.1 started by *****, uid ***
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: using channel 3
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: Using interface ppp0
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttySHCF0
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap
0x0> <magic 0x37bb9f10> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <mru
1514> <asyncmap 0x0> <auth pap> <magic 0x4d5b8ff5> <pcomp> <accomp>
<mrru 1514> <endpoint [null]>]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: sent [LCP ConfRej id=0x1 <mrru 1514>]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: rcvd [LCP ConfAck id=0x1 <asyncmap
0x0> <magic 0x37bb9f10> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x2 <mru
1514> <asyncmap 0x0> <auth pap> <magic 0x4d5b8ff5> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x2 <mru
1514> <asyncmap 0x0> <auth pap> <magic 0x4d5b8ff5> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: sent [PAP AuthReq id=0x1
user="rmf" password=<hidden>]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: rcvd [PAP AuthNak id=0x1]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: PAP authentication failed
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: sent [LCP TermReq id=0x2 "Failed
to authenticate ourselves to peer"]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: rcvd [LCP TermAck id=0x2]
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: Connection terminated.
Sep 21 14:47:22 localhost pppd[2012]: Exit.

I don't understand all of it, but it looks like it has to do with the
authentication setting, right?

When I go into the terminal and su into the admin. user, and place the
lines of code as advised by Linuxant, I get a message telling me it
can't find the hcfpciconfig file. Hhm!!

Is that because of the line I added to the file as instructed earlier by
them? I can see there is acopy of it that has .old for an extension, so
maybe it put away the one with the right authentication info... ?

Many thanks, & Blessings,
Ruth
