Personal note:
On this late August Friday with so much hustle and bustle and stress about
us, it is good to share words of good success. Here's one such good word.
Five minutes can make a difference
I just wanted to tell you that your e-mail bulletins have inspired me to be
more proactive at my local mall. My husband and I were walking through the
mall and one of the retailers was an art gallery. This store is located on
the 1st floor at the center of the mall, on the corner where a major entrance
comes in and meets the main thoroughfare. Needless to say, it is a prime
location with a lot of foot traffic generated in the area. While the
majority of the artwork displayed was of still life or landscapes, right
in the front window was an oil painting of a nude woman with a man standing
behind her. His arm was around her covering her breasts and she was holding
a piece of silkish material that just so happened to drape in front of her
lower anatomy at just the right location. She had her head turned and was
kissing him. I remarked to my husband how beautiful the painting was, but
how inappropriate it was to have it displayed in a family mall in the window
in front of one of the busiest areas of the mall.
Encouraged by your e-mails, I walked into the store and talked to the
manager. He basically gave me a nice brush-off mumbling about how he'll look
into it. We didn't stop there. We went over to the customer service desk
that just so happened to be 25 feet away and filled out complaint cards for
the mall manager to review. We showed the customer service people at the
desk the picture, and they agreed it was not appropriate. A few days later,
I got an e-mail from the manager stating that they had made the store remove
the painting from the display window.
Thanks for your bulletins - they inspire me to take a grassroots effort to
make a difference in my community. It only took 5 minutes away from my
shopping trip and it was well worth it. No longer will I be complacent about
indecency in my local shopping areas.
A resource that we believe has very positive impact is the following:
Nancy Leigh DeMoss' booklet, "The Look - does God really care what I wear?"
She also has produced via her radio broadcasts a series of cassettes and CDs
that carry the same title.
In "The Look", Nancy challenges Christians to ask themselves tough
questions: Who decides what I will wear and why? What message does my
clothing communicate? And, how can I reflect the glory of God in my
wardrobe? Biblical, practical and motivating, The Look challenges women,
parents, and teens to discover the Truth about clothing and modesty, and to
make choices based on God's eternal perspective. Topics include: 1. Sizing up
Styles 2. Your Philosophy is Showing 3. Beyond Blushing? 4. Whose Reflection
is That in the Mirror and more.
