[OFB Cafe] is there some flaky .avi spec we don't know about?

I think your problem is that you likely are using a different AVI  
codec on the Linux box than what the Mac will support. AVI isn't the  
easiest to get to play from one computer to another, I've found.

MPEG-4 H.264 should be pretty well universally supported, and also  
quite good.
