For Christmas, I got one of my sons a new HP laptop of some flavor, I
don't recall the model number right now, very featureful and nicely
outfitted, exactly $500 + tax at Best Buy.  Admittedly, it had Vista
instead of XP, but perhaps one of the XP "down"grade options is
available.
