[CS-FSLUG] Linux Conversion Experience

I have a friend in the Lord who has asked my help with his computer on
several occasions. Someone simply gave him one, and it is his first one to
actually own. It ran XP on some decent but cheap hardware. My first look
at it found the thing loaded with viruses and spyware. Got it clean, but
there were other flaws. His nice Audigy soundcard died, but the onboard
sound wasn't so bad. However, most of the time I spent helping him clean
up infestations of junk.

This last time around he got hold of something which is probably based in
a rootkit or some other hiding technique. Using the best cleanup software,
the main bulk of the stuff would be removed, but after going online for a
short time, it would regenerate. When I explained the only better answer
was paying money for more expert service, he asked if I had trouble with
viruses.

"Well, of course not. I run Linux" He asked what that was, and I showed
him Kubuntu from the CD on his own machine. He decided that was easy
enough, and asked me to do a Linux conversion. We still have his product
key if it doesn't work out, but I'm now installing openSUSE 11.0 because
it had better drivers for this particular eMachine -- at least, the
hardware worked better out of the box. I'm going to setup all the extra
goodies he as come to expect.

I'm praying he understand and learn to like the freedom.
