Just thought that I'd let you all know that I did get Jedit running
finally.

I installed Java using Ubuntu's Synaptic package manager, uninstalled
Jedit, and then reinstalled it using the java installer (instead of
through Ubuntu's package manager). So far it looks like it's going to be
a super text editor... 

I also got Bible Desktop installed. So far so good there too.
