Not necessary.  Imagine a server with 100 users...

Correct.  However it might take longer to find out exactly what to change in 
order to avoid it.  I agree that this is a quick and dirty solution, one that 
does not get to the heart of the matter.

You can keep the "david" user.

Log out, and as root rename your home directory /home/david-old.  Then remove 
the user "david".  Then create a new user "david", creating a new home 
directory.
