Here's a simple way of cheating - get a CAT 5 KVM extender from Black
Box, and stick the actual computer in a closet or another room from
the monitor.  :)

That's actually similar to how I have it now, except my
desktop(ex-desktop) is in a closet - still gets adequate ventilation -
and I just login remotely when I actually have to do something with it
from my laptop.  Most of the time it's just a file and print server -
another benefit - you tend to print quite a bit less if it is an
inconvenience to get to the printer, instead of it sitting on the desk
next to you.
