[CS-FSLUG] Midi Keyboard Support in GNU & BSD

I'm just curious. I don't own a keyboard, and I'm not certain what I
would accomplish if I did have one - other than going to jail for
disturbing the peace. :) However, I would like to know, as I'm
updating "Penguin in the Pew", whether there's anything special I need
to say about midi-cable instruments being supported by GNU & BSD. I
figured this list would be as good a place to start as any.

I know one of the SUSE guys mentioned that his wife uses one of the
GNU/Linux apps to compose musical score sheets for the choir. But if
someone wants to hook up a midi keyboard and cut their own CD, do they
need to check support for their brand, or will any midi instrument
generally "just work". And does getting such instruments to "just
work" require any funky twiddling in most cases?

Any input is deeply appreciated.
