mine is an old system with a newer monitor, and i only have 128 Mg RAM.ever
since i upgraded a few weeks ago i have to manually start kde from a
terminal.
i get kdesplash error or something like that.
and cant connect to xset?cant remember and i very rarely log off anyway.
but the settings after i change them dont stay and when i reset them sometimes
i have to change them.
it is really weird as when you set in control center they should stay there
until you change but it doesnt.
i think i have it narrowed down to a hardware/software issue, graphic issue or
i have turned totally incompetent after 3 years.
btw i run mandrake 10.1 and do use gui mostly but do love the power of
commandline.
the experience you are getting will be invaluable as it helps to see what
happens on different machines.
