[CS-FSLUG] Distro Question

Is there a way that I can change distributions without having to back up all my files first? Also, since my desire is to change distro's for the sake of having a more recent kernel and hopefully a better running system, what does everyone recommend?

P.S. IF nothing else, I suppose I could just start using the Slax liveboot CD, I guess.
