I can't say that I've experienced any problems with my banking ...
QIF-format files are available (also offer files for Quicken 2002+,
and MS Money 99 - not sure if those formats are supported by gnuCash).

I deal with one of these branchless (phone/atm/online only) banks -
this one actually run under another name by one of Canada's major
banks, CIBC - and have been quite happy with it. Offers file formats
that should work with gnuCash (haven't actually tried it though), pays
out above average interest, and also doesn't cost me a dime.
