The only question is how to explain the departure of Chris Stone
(who used to be the main force in Novell's top management in
favor of Novell's support for FOSS) just a few days prior to this
announcement.  Certainly by the time that Stone resigned from his
post, he must have known at least that this settlement is likely
to happen.

I can't see how this can be explained unless the money from
Microsoft has some strings attached which have not been publicly
disclosed.
