Here is how I see it:
Christmas: Long word
Xmas: lazy mans word :-)

When writing or typing, I'm more likely going to use Xmas, when speaking I 
have always used the full word Christmas.

So whether it's a bad thing or not, to me it's all about laziness. :-)
