actually, it means something akin to 'trusty scout'.

this reminds me, though, of a favorite gary larson cartoon.  the lone
ranger is sitting in a rocking chair (as an old man) reading an 'indian
dictionary.'  he discovers with much dismay that 'kemosabe' is an apache
expression for 'horse's rear end'.  :-)
