The screen saver in KDE worked for me very well not long ago, I forget
which distro it was. DPMS never seems to work very well under Linux,
at least in my experience. But I very strongly suspect that the causes
are better studied as distro-trouble, than KDE trouble, because the
issues involved are far more integration of desktop/X.org/kernel,
rather than desktop alone.<br>

But I very much agree about the 'upgrade or buzz off'. It is much
better for us, for people that care about people, to buzz off! <br>

I am very carefully now studying GoboLinux and ROX. <br>

Gobo is interesting in light of your comments below. In the Gobo I
have running virtually right now, I can run OpenOffice 2.3.1 or 2.4.2.
Not 3.0.0. The same goes for many other items. It uses KDE as primary
desktop, but it's 3.5.x, and I haven't tried DPMS/SS yet; I'll let you
know when I know. <br>

At the same time I am studying ROX. I have decided to wait until I get
an answer to my Python query (I think there is one, I had trouble
figuring out Slashdot+Gmane email list joining), before I decide how I
am going to try installing ROX onto Gobo. But reports are intriguing.<br>

Sometime around 3.5.2, on several distros and on three different
machines, KDE across the board has maintained one particular bug: the
screensaver and DPMS controls do not work. Period. I get no interaction
between the running process and the hardware. The screensaver never
comes on. Instead, the hardware does its default and blanks the screen
after a short period of inactivity. 3.5.9 on openSUSE 11.0 (and 3.5.10
on 11.1) still does this. It's also broken in Etch and Lenny, and it
doesn't matter whether I run 32-bit or 64-bit.

There are other annoyances I could list, but the point is KDE has
gotten progressively more broken in my experience. I am particularly
disappointed in Konsole with it's spastic changes and regressions each
release, Kscd, Koffice never fixing the kerning on TTFs, etc. Of all
the projects, this one has recently become far worse with the attitude
of, "We aren't fixing older releases. Upgrade of buzz off." I got
enough of that from the earlier days of GNOME.

Qt and Gtk both are just dandy, but the two major desktops symbolize
all that's wrong with Open Source: too much, too soon, and too many
ill-considered innovations.
