[CS-FSLUG] External HD Reformat

I have an older USB Maxtor Personal Storage drive which has been replaced.  
I am considering using it for dedicated Linux backup. Current format is  
NTFS. Any particular reason I can't or shouldn't reformat this 160GB to  
ext3 or ext4? It will simplify permissions when copying files back and  
forth.
