rsync may be useful also; it uses delta compression, so if the system
is fairly close to its new revision, then it's very fast. Gentoo uses
it to copy the Portage tree (basically the ports collection, in
FreeBSD tree), for example. I'm not sure, however, how fast it is on a
mostly-binary collection of files.
