I suppose the headaches of RPM just don't register that much on me. I
still really like CentOS (RedHat clone) for server-like use, and SUSE
has recently worked with my changing hardware with less tweaking. I also
really like Ubuntu, and their help community is huge, but the last few
times I've tested their work, I can't get it to install cleanly, and in
too many cases, won't even boot properly. As you note elsewhere (blush)
it comes down to hardware differences.

I still cling to FreeBSD as one of the best-designed systems, but they
are in a rough patch right now. The new 7.x stuff has had several show
stoppers for me. Their PPC section is having a tough time with the eMac
hardware. But the build-optimized-from-scratch scripts are simply
amazing. They've got great documentation for main tasks, but the HOWTOs
on hardware peculiarities is really scattered, when you can find it.
Also, for desktop use, they are mostly ignored by Adobe and similar 3rd
party standards. Still, over the long haul I'll be most likely to run
that on anything except laptops.
