If there are reasonable hardware differences then I'd be more inclined 
to blame that; however, having seen first hand what most computers 
running pirated software are like, usually there are some bizarre 
problems with them (malware, or corrupted CD images being downloaded 
perhaps?). I don't see unpatched versions of Windows causing too much 
trouble outside of being zombie machines though, I've lost count of the 
number of machiens with the Klob or Koobface viruses on them (ie: 
AntiVirus Lab 2009 malware or Antivirus XP 2008/9). I swear sometimes, 
the number of machines that come in with those new viruses makes it seem 
as though all new machines are just shipping with it preinstalled right 
from Redmond.
