Thanks, Tim & Ed,

I received a reply from the Ubuntu people and the problem was that I was
trying to put the root partition on a jfs partition.  As the kernel
doesn't have support compiled in for other than ext3 or reiser, it
couldn't handle it.  When I changed the file system to reiser, it
worked.  Thanks again!
