Well if 'df -h' doesn't show you its mount point it probably isn't...
yet.  What you are probably seeing is something your dmesg has listed
as found.  I just found this automount tool for an external USB DVD
drive... have yet to test with my external USB hd, but it worked for
the DVD:

Obviously searching the web you'll find tons of methods.
