I wouldn't really recommend that because most case fans count on the
chassis with panels to act as the duct for the movement of air.

One thing to look at if your system has more than one case fan, is
that they aren't both going in the same direction - i.e. both pushing
air in, creating positive pressure (doesn't allow the warm air to be
moved out of the chassis, effectively creating an oven), or both
pulling out creating negative pressure or a vacuum (not a true vacuum
since the cases are not air tight), where no cool air is drawn in
other than the vents on the case.
