I've used AVG on Win98 for a long time - it's systray icon will loose color 
is updates are not working.  Just replaced NAV with AVG on a WinME system 
in August.  There was a problem with auto-update about a week later, but 
FAQ already had an answer.

Avast & AVG are both free or home use.
