This is not a point by point response to you posting. But is my experience
with Linux. For me Multimedia is important. But I do not need DVD playing
support for that I have a DVD player and a PS2 machine that does that. But I
need wma support and mp3 etc. With all the linux distro's this has been an
easy task, taking only about 15 min to download and install the software. I
have even found some distros that come with the support, PCLinuxOS and Mepis
come to mind. I am using Kanotix currently and to the install the support, I
deeded I simply went to there support pages and downloaded some scripts they
had and executed them. Now I have all that I need. I have not used Windows in
over 7 to 9 years. I have no need for it and am a happy Linux Camper and do
not spend much time administering my system, perhaps a half hour per week
running the updater and installing updates that is it. I have never run into
the problems that you have. I would choose a distro spend the hour or two
configuring it and simply stick with it for a year then make intelligent
decision as to what software/OS to use.
